A Clean Future for Hydrogen

Hydrogen is an inexhaustible, emission free fuel. Hydrogen gas (H2 or molecular hydrogen) holds great promise as an alternative and sustainable fuel. It is the most efficient and cleanest burning fuel known to man.

Fuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity through an electrochemical process rather than a combustion process typical of most power plants and car engines. This process is emission free producing only water vapor and heat.

Currently, hydrogen is produced from many sources of energy, including fossil fuels, such as natural gas and coal, through industrial processes including coal gasification and steam reforming. These processes require high energy inputs, and are accompanied with the release of green house gases (GHGs) and other noxious byproducts, such as carbon monoxide.

In the long term, hydrogen will be produced from a variety of energy sources, including renewable hydro, wind, solar and nuclear power, which will be a major advancement in a sustainable clean energy future.

In the meantime, the industry is working at building the infrastructure and making major advancements in fuel cell design and fuel delivery options.
